The Who Sell Out, the Fillmore! On June 17th of 1967 British mod rockers The Who played the second of a pair of weekend shows at Bill Graham’s Fillmore Auditorium, in San Francisco. Making their debut San Francisco appearance, The Who destroyed the eardrums and blew the minds of the Fillmore faithful with sheer volume and stage antics. Uncredited, the Santana Blues Band opened up the Fillmore show, and the Loading Zone followed. They would destroy their equipment onstage after an electrifying performance at the Monterey International Pop Festival one day later, on the 18th. Artist Bonnie MacLean’s poster design included 8 twisted faces, with purple ink on an orange background. Note in the very bottom right corner of the poster, “Jim Hendrix” is listed in the tiniest of print as opening the show for Jefferson Airplane and Brazilian jazz guitarist, Gabor Szabo. This poster is often paired or framed in tandem with BG-69, by artist Clifford Charles Sealy, which was printed in the same colors. It was printed once legally before 2010. It is included in the Bill Graham series on page 122 of the Art of Rock book. Measuring 14 3/64 x 21 61/64” this poster is BG-68-OP-1 on page 407 of the King guide (12th ed). The original Place Stamp Here reverse postcard, BG-68-OPC-A, measures 4 31/64 x 7 1/16”. I’ll post it below in my comments. Special thanks to Joel Selvin for his contributions to this post. I can see for miles and miles. Can you? Don’t get Mooned again!
